WORKSHOPS AT SOOKI STUDIO
INTRODUCTION TO KNITTING
DESCRIPTION
For Ages 6- 12 - Join for an Introduction to Knitting with textile artist, educator, and mother Meg Glasser. In this 5 week series, students will learn foundational techniques for knitting in a supportive, patient, and creative learning environment. Each student will complete a project and go home with their own set of supplies so they may continue their practice independently.
BENEFITS & OUR APPROACH
Through our teaching approach, we make knitting accessible for all types of learners and ages. Knitting offers a screen-free, low-energy, focused activity that has proven to have a positive impact on mental wellness, including:
Improved Self-Regulation
Stress and Anxiety Relief
Confidence Building
Creative Skill Development
Mindfulness
Many of our parents share our classes' positive effects on their children, improving their ability to focus and promoting an overall sense of relaxation. One parent shared:
“My kiddo is neurodivergent and needs something to do with their hands most of the time - otherwise, they turn to finger biting as a stim. Crocheting has provided them with an excellent stim that is also skill building. They also love sharing their projects with friends and family and feel proud when wearing their creations.” - Parent of 9-yr-old
WHAT WE WILL LEARN
In this five-week series, students will gain an introduction to knitting, and those with experience will gain the next steps for building on their skills. By returning week after week, we are building a routine, building skills, and cultivating rituals. Students will learn four types of stitches, including how to cast on, knit, purl, and bind off. Additionally, they will learn how to read patterns and will be able to choose from a wide variety of projects to complete in class.
At a time when our youth are highly exposed to screens, kitting provides a screen-free space where they can work with their hands, slow down, develop hand-eye coordination, mindfulness, and a self-soothing practice.
CLASS SIZE
Our class size is small, capped at 12 students, to ensure each student receives individual attention and guidance. Maintaining an intimate class size encourages community building among students and creates a sense of familiarity and connections with other students.
